APRIL 2002
The new season has got off to a cracking start with a good run of large sea trout entering the river and pushing quickly through the beats. Best so far 5lbs 10oz to mini rapalla, we have started taking fish by fly at night though with low densities of fish, this is not always easy.
For 2002 we now control the left hand bank which will make several of the pools easier to fish. We also control an extra mile of the Warleggan river with a number of good natural pools. Heavy rain now forcast over the next few days which should bring in fresh fish until the school peal arrive, early in June.
END OF SEASON REPORT
As expected, the sea trout catch at 371 fish was the best we have achieved. By far the majority of these fish were taken by fly at night. Salmon fishing remained difficult with only one real spate for the whole season (third week Nov) Salmon are increasing now (Jan) and spawnings prolific. We must hope that some rain comes to distribute the fish well upriver. We ended the season with 20 salmon, taken in the last ten weeks of the season. Best salmon of the year, winning the Simon Rothman memorial trophy, fell to Rod Spratley from Guernsey (16lbs)
2001 produced a new record rainbow trout of 12lbs 8oz from Hamblyshill pond, caught by Mike Martin from Northampton on a brown nymph.
River Warleggan
In addition to the Lostwithiel club tickets available at no extra charge to guests, we now control 2 miles of the R.Warleggan. Whilst this is mainly spawning and juvenile habitat, there are five really good pools available to guests which should produce a fish or two!
EGG BOX PROJECT 2001/2
4 hens stripped to yield approx 20000 eggs for planting out in the ST Neot river. We have a further 25000 eggs here at Wainsford which will be distributed in the River Warleggan and into Hawkstor pit, high on Bodmin Moor. Approx 4000 will be reared to smolt stage in purpose built ponds.
SEPTEMBER 2001 NEWS
With the sea trout season coming to a close, it does look as if 2001 will be another record year. We are still below last years total but rain has brought huge runs of larger fish which had taken up residence in lower beats. Five fish over 4lbs have already been returned this month. The counter show that more sea trout ran the river up to July than in the whole of 2000!
Salmon have been slow given virtually a whole summer of drought levels. We now have heavy rain in prospect and expect large numbers of salmon to take advantage of higher water levels to run the river.
Brown trout fishing has been much improved on the lakes and 16 year old Arthur Jeffrey showed what can be done by taking four brown trout on a deer hair sedge for 18lbs!
JULY 2001 NEWS
July has seen a huge run of Peal on the Fowey following over 2000 fish through the counter in June and it seems that the middle river has proved their favourtie resting place.
127 sea trout were taken by Wainsford guests in July mainly by fly at night. Despite low water fish have run consistently and they seem to prefer the fly fished deep and slow.
Alex Grey from Birmingham set a new record of 26 sea trout for his week, taken on a Black Pennel.
Jeff Eliot took the first Salmon of the season on a small Flying 'C'.
The Wainsford brown trout lake has now produced four of over 5lbs to small Nymphs and Buzzers. Fish continue to grow well in the heavily weeded environment.
Restormel Fish Counter
The Environment Agency has finalised results for 2000. The counter recorded 1,692 Salmon and 6,002 Sea Trout for the year. This is most encouraging being the best figures since the counter was validated. A much larger Grilse run than in previous years is heartening and augers well for the future.
FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE APRIL 2001 UPDATE
Whilst fishing on Club Waters has been suspended due to access problems across farmland, fishing at Wainsford is unaffected as the river and lakes are within the boundaries of the estate. We are watching the situation carefully with regard to the lower beats as whilst access is still uninterupted, it does adjoin farmland. We will continue to consult with local farmers and MAFF and regularly update the site.
APRIL FISHING PROSPECTS
Large Sea Trout were first seen in the second week of March and fish have already taken up residence in the Trago Mills pools. Good water levels should continue to encourage these early runners and April/May present the best opportunity of the season for a double figure fish.
We have enjoyed spectacular success with the first year's Salmon rearing project at Wainsford and have some 12,000 hatched fry ready for introduction into the two new smolt ponds, with half of the fish being 'seeded out' in the upper river Warleggan.
END OF SEASON REPORT 15th DECEMBER 2000
We have had an eventful year in the new millennium with a larger than usual run of sea trout which proved more difficult than usual to catch! On top of this we surely experienced the wettest autumn and winter on record, with more days unfishable than fishable.

SIMON ROTHMAN MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy was awarded for the first time this year following Simon's sad death earlier. It is awarded for the best December salmon and this was taken by Ian Ashby from the New Forest. He caught and returned a 15lb cock fish on the last day of the season.
WHISKY TASTING/FLY TYING EVENING
An event run for the first time with Gary Champion, local casting and fly tying expert. The fly tying was gradually superceded by the whisky tasting and the event will definitely be repeated so we can all remember what happened!
Guest Roger Baker from Porthleven runs a gamefishing business in the Florida Keys. He has caught 150lb+ tarpon together with bonefish, permit etc. He describes the downstream run of the salmon that he lost on 20lb line in Dirty Water Pool as "Not as fast as a bonefish but as strong as any tarpon"!!
2001 PLANS
We will have two rods available for guests on the Lostwithiel water from next season, at no extra cost. This water is valuable in low water conditions, being just off the tide. Plans to buy another two miles of the Warleggan for brown trout fishing have nearly reached fruition ans should be in place for 2001.
UPDATE OCTOBER 5TH
A very large run of silver fish passed through the beats at the weekend on high clear water. Three were caught at Wainsford, best 7lbs, but larger fish have been caught downstream, best 12lbs 8oz. It is obvious that a much greater run than usual is in course, and we await high tides in 7 days time with keen interest. The fish counter is now 45% up on 1999 year to date.
