It was 1988 and Patrick was attending a classic car auction in Stoneleigh. I received this strange phone call.
Don! he said, I have never seen anything like it!(It sounded as if he had seen a ghost).
There is this Austin 7 here, he said, it isn't half funny!
Whats so funny about an Austin 7?
Don! you will like it, it's so funny! Shall I buy it?

Patrick knew that Austin 7's were my favorite subject. In all, I have had 29 of them.
My first Austin 7 was a 1935 Ruby which is still in my Grandma's timber shed in Sri Lanka.
I had hidden it there before boarding the VC10 to Heathrow in 1968.
The correspondent from 'The Automobile' magazine who attended the Stoneleigh sale wrote - 'Someone had a lot of fun building this Austin 7 special, with its tandem seating, and no doubt its new owner will also get a lot of fun.
Patrick arrived with it that afternoon.
God! he was right,it was funny!
So far,It has brought many a smile on the highway!
