Your Annual MOT Test
The MOT Test is probably the most feared garage visit of the motorist's calendar - it really needn't be!
It's a necessary but unwelcome excursion for all drivers with vehicles of three years and older, but consumers do not need to panic - MOT's exist for your protection providing the only statutory test for safety and environmental legislation.
It should be viewed as a sensible opportunity to have your vehicle examined by an expert who will ensure it meets all legal and safety requirements.
The new test, introduced on 25th September 1995, is designed to reduce the levels of emissions for all petrol and diesel cars and is a positive step towards reducing the high pollution problem in the UK.
There are a few simple things you can do prior to the MOT which may help to ease your nerves before the trip to the garage.
INTERIOR
*Check the seats are secure.
*Stitching of seat belts should not be frayed.
*Check the steering wheel for cracks.
*Make sure the boot is uncluttered.
EXTERIOR
*Garages can refuse to test extremely dirty vehicles.
*Check that your lights are in good working order - clean & not damaged.
*Tyres need a minimum tread of 1.6mm.
*Cracked number plates could mean a definite failure.
*Has the windscreen any serious damage?
*Is there too much rust on the structural points of the car?
MECHANICS
*Is the horn loud enough to give adequate warning?
*The fuel cap needs to fit securely.
*Is the exhaust making too much noise?
*Can the brakes be fully applied with ease?
*Does the handbrake work?
*Are all controls such as the indicators and switches in working order?
You should try to not leave the checks until the day before your test but include them as part of more regular checks which will help to maintain a better looked after vehicle.
The MOT Test is designed to be customer friendly and every tester should have a customer viewing area by the test bay providing the owner with an opportunity to watch their vehicle being tested and enabling them to discuss any problems afterwards.
