Ockley Parish Plan Questionnaire – Summary of Results

We received replies from 170 homes and 420 people - about 50% of the total. Representation was excellent: all parts of the village; male and female equally; the age range and home ownership in line with the total village population; and also many newer residents contributed.

To retain and develop the most important village attributes of community and environment, there are three main issues - Traffic, Housing and Transport.

THE THREE MAIN ISSUES
Traffic
This was the most important issue with the highest number of responses. Over 70% of people felt in danger on the A29 especially by the shop. Parking was a concern at the same location.
The suggested sites and means for improving road safety were well supported. Nearly 80% thought that traffic speed is the key problem with 60% favouring a reduced speed limit. There was also significant support for more footpaths, for environmental street lights and pelican crossings. BUT 15% wanted no changes – hence actions need to be looked at carefully.

Housing Needs
44 people are or will soon be in need of housing in the village – many are the younger members of our community. In addition, 20 have left recently because of lack of affordable housing.
Affordable Housing was, therefore, seen as one of the major needs, with a focus on young and older people. BUT 24% wanted no new housing and so this topic will need careful consideration.

Transport
Over 50% said that better public transport was needed and yet few said they would use a more regular bus service. The car is the main way of getting about but nearly 30% of respondents use the train at least weekly. They would like to see improvements in frequency, timetable and cost.

It is concerning that 30-40 people have difficulty getting out of Ockley to hospital or doctor or shopping, etc. However, over 30 people said they would be involved in a car share scheme.

OTHER CONCLUSIONS
School, Church, Shop and Social

The importance of the school, nursery and church was widely endorsed. Similarly the shop is well used - by 75% at least weekly. There is reasonable support for a mobile library, a fast food service, tennis, badminton and a gardening club. However, in addition, social activities for the 17-25 yr old age group need to be improved.

Services/Security
The main worry is police support, both the local and emergency service. This may be linked to the chief security concerns of property and vehicle theft. Hence more police presence is needed and many said they would join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Information and Support
35% wanted to know more about Parish Council activities and 28% wanted more publicity on planning applications. Many want more notice boards although many also thought not!
Lastly it was great to see many potential volunteers to help on the Parish Council, Village Hall, School Governors, Flower Show and to help maintain our footpaths.

NEXT STEPS
1. Public Meeting, Village Hall, 26th June, 8.00pm. To discuss the questionnaire results.
2. Build the Village Plan on these results and identify groups to take the key actions forward
