SUNDAY 23rd APRIL THIS YEAR WILL BE A BIG DAY IN THE

The first reason will involve a volunteer work force cleaning back the edges over the whole length of the footpath along the village green.
The second reason will be the formal unveiling of the recently restored village pump placed back in its original position.

On the morning of Sunday 23rd April the committee of the Ockley Society is organising a large (hopefully!) working party to clean back the overgrown edges of the footpath and restore the path to its original width of 5’. The path is approximately 450m long and the idea is to get at least 45 volunteers to commit to taking charge of working on 10m each on the day.

All being well it should be a great atmosphere, fun, sociable – and rewarding in achievement…and not take too long if we get enough volunteers!

The whole path could be cleared in less than two hours!
CAN YOU HELP? WILL YOU HELP?

THE PLAN

First and most important – if you would like to be part of this unique gathering please let us know by 31st March at the latest. Just ring any of the following committee members:

  • David Waugh 627520
  • Clive Bordoli 628255
  • David Moir 627235
  • Bill Maguire 627443
  • Dick Thomas 627569.

Then, we meet at 10 am in the marquee on Sunday 23rd April where each volunteer will be allocated a number, which will be a 10-metre length of the path. The sections will be clearly marked and the original edges will be identified. And that’s it. Coffee and tea will be available in the marquee during the morning. When the job is done there will be communal lunch in the marquee, courtesy of the Ockley Society committee, (one good reason for needing to know the numbers).

So, if you use the path or just want to be part of this team effort to maintain it, the committee members would be delighted to hear from you and see you there.

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN TOOLS. We suggest a spade, shovel, rake and wheelbarrow if you can. And a stiff brush if you have one. Some of the spoil will be placed in low spots by the roadside and the rest will go into a trailer. Once the path is cleared the Parish Council will look at the potential for resurfacing with tarmac if necessary.

    History of the footpath

Following lunch there will be a brief formal ceremony of the cutting of the tape to unveil the renovated pump.
