The Luncheon of the Boating Party

Pierre Auguste Renoir
Oil on canvas. c 1881

This canvas captures Renoir's enjoyment of life and exhibits both his virtuousity in his rendering of the still life in the middle foreground, and his ability to show la vie moderne so adeptly. Here, as in The Moulin de la Galette, Renoir's friends posed for him.
In the left foreground, petting the dog, is Aline Charigot. Resting on the rail directly behind her is the depicted restaurant's proprieter, Alphonse Fournaise. In the right foreground, astride a chair is Gustave Caillibotte conversing with Ellen Andree, and leaning over both is the journalist Maggiolo. In the centre, glass to her lips is la belle Angele, while further back is financier Charles Ephrussi talking to Alphonse Fournaise (junior). With chin resting on hand, leaning on the balcony, is Alphonsine Fournaise. Finally, on the far right Jeanne Samary is in conversation with Paul Lhote and Lestringuez.
This painting shows no hint of the changes in style to come, which emerged during the creation of The Umbrellas.
