The White Horse

Paul Gauguin
Oil on canvas. c 1878
Paul Gauguin was one of the most formidable artists of the late 19th century, his work having a profound influence on that of the 20th.
The White Horse in the foreground lends it's name to the work but the title was given by Daniel de Montfried some time after the painting was completed. Although the horse was a fairly rare sight in Polynesia at the time, Gauguin has managed to place the three creatures in this tropical paradise as if they belonged there quite naturally. The rich colours, lush vegetation and unclothed figures perhaps suggest an eden-like location where man could happily co-exist with nature. Such scenes may well have been reminiscent of his childhood days.C.G.
