Thomas Gainsborough
Oil on canvas. c 1771
One of Gainsborough's most refined portrait's of a man.
Well known for his handsome looks,Capt.Wade, hand on hip, looks out from the portrait appearing immensely proud and pleased with himself.Gainsborough based the pose upon a Van Dyck painting of Charles the First's cousin James Stuart, which at the time formed part of the collection at Corsham Court in Wiltshire.
The artist presented this portrait to the owners of Bath's New Assembly Rooms in celebration of the buildings completion in 1771. The New Assembly Rooms were used by this Spa town's visitors and residents alike for sophisticated, elegant socialising. Balls, card playing, tea drinking and the enjoyment of fine music were some of the activities. William Wade supervised the entertainments as a sort of M.C.
The Captain's graceful demeanour is enhanced by his elongated body. In response to comments at the time, Gainsborough added the house and steps. The subject was originally to be seen in a purely rural background, but it was thought to be too rustic a setting for the suave and urbane Captain William Wade.
