Registering your business with the various search engines does not mean that you will automatically be found when a user types in your name, if you are found you could well be at the end of a long list. In fact it is not unusual to type in a specific word and get results of 50,000 plus sites containing your phrase or word. Even if your business is within that search there is no gurantee that you will be ranked in the top 100, let alone the top 10. Put quite simply being registered with search engines does not mean you will be easily found.
As more and more business' go online it is even more important to market your site offline as well as online. You must include your website address on all your stationary including invoices, business cards, letterheads etc. If you have company vehicles aim to put your website address on there too. Any advertising in the local or national press must include your website address. After all you wouldn't exclude your phone or fax number from such advertising would you! A website will be just as familiar!
Always keep your own website updated with information. If you have a new product or service make sure people know about it. The Internet is a prime source for information for those with internet access and, by making your site interesting and informative you will enhance not only the reputation of your site but also your business which, in turn should encourage return visits to your website. Remember the most effective form of advertising is recommendation from a satisfied customer.
