About James Gorman

James Gorman was born in Gourock, Scotland. He studied mural painting at the Glasgow School of Art and these mural painting talents were put into action in Trinity College, Glasgow, The Alliance Building Society, in Ayr and Moorcroft Primary School,Gourock. His original artistic influence came from his grandfather and other influences come from Edward Burra,Picasso and Stanley Spencer.

James is also a landscape painter ... influenced by Turner, Gillies, Cotman and contemporary artist Lucian Freud.

Here's an artist with a wonderful variety of skills in his armoury, from his contorted figures intertwined with strange beasts and animals ... along with his passionate representations of his island of Arran (not shown on this run).

James arrived on the Isle of Arran via Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock ... he just slipped down the Clyde as he puts it. He has exhibited widely including in `64 when he showed with the Glasgow Group; in `78 at the Woodstock Gallery in London and again in London in`79 at the Chande Gallery and in Edinburgh in1980.

In 1988 James began his long association with 90`s Gallery in where he showed regularly in mixed exhibitions.

Perhaps rather late for a painter of his calibre, James first solo wasn't till 1996 when he showed at the John D.Kelly, Glasgow. Two years later he took part in the Past and Present exhibition along side some of the most famous Scottish artists of the past two hundred years including Charles Rennie MacKintosh, Sir David Murray and Jack Knox.

He has travelled to China and Central Asia where he was much influenced by the domes and mosaics in the mosques he saw. He has also painted in Paris.
