About Mairi Aitken

Mairi Aitken graduated in drawing and painting from The Glasgow School of Art. After gaining a teaching certificate from Jordanhill College of education she went on teach in a number of schools in both England and Scotland.

Exhibitions

Her work has been shown in many exhibitions and galleries, including the RGI; Laing’s exhibition; Richmondhill Gallery, Surrey; Stenton, East Lothian and Tolquhon Gallery, Aberdeen.

She has also taken part in small group exhibitions in The Green Gallery, Aberfoyle; The Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh; J.D. Kelly Gallery, Glasgow; the Auld Kirk Museum, Kirkintilloch and The Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie.

One Woman shows have been held at the Candle Maker Gallery, Edinburgh; Bishopbriggs Library; The Accord Hospice, Paisley and the Aldessan, Clachan of Campsie.

In 1994, she took part in a cultural exchange between the twinned towns of Bishopbriggs and Corbeil-Essones, which involved workshops and exhibitions in both Scotland and France.

Awards

Mairi exhibits regularly with the Glasgow Society of Women Artists of which she is Past President (1997-2000). She is also a member of the Paisley Art Institute where in 1997 she won the Arnold Clark Prize and in 2000 she won The Green Fine Art Award.

In 1996 she won the Strathkelvin Council Purchase Prize and in 1997 and 1998 she won the East Dumbartonshire Council Purchase Prize.

Mairi's work has been acquired by schools, Councils, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and is in private collections in France, Switzerland, Cyprus and the UK.

Landscape, still life and people figure mostly in her work, which for the most part is carried out in gouache or acrylic.
