Selma Rebus
Glasgow

Selma is a Glasgow based batik artist who has developed her own style of silk painting using batik and other resist techniques to which she was introduced at Rosslyn Design workshop, near Edinburgh.

Inspiration for her work comes from Scottish fishing villages and the Greek islands, encompassing bold, bright Mediterranean images of still life and sea life themes. As well as using three different silk fabric types, Pongee, Habutai and thick Twill which have their own unique composition and weave affecting the colour diffusion and penetration, Selma likes to batik on a variety of papers such as tissue paper and silk paper. In addition to batik wax, Selma uses other resist techniques, anti-diffusants and outliners to give more definition to the subject.

Selma has exhibited at the Byres Road OXFAM Book Shop Open Window exhibition and at The Batik Guild’s previous exhibitions at Hillhead Library and at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre. She also exhibits regularly at Marchmont Gallery, Edinburgh, and has twice exhibited a batik at the Paisley Art Institute's Annual Exhibition alongside more conventional art forms. In addition, Selma enjoys exhibiting her work at 'Paintings & Railings' (Glasgow West End Festival) and at galleries in Aberdour, Fife.

Three Gulls by Janet Durden Hey

On returning to the U.K. in 1967 she taught ceramics at her local college and in 1980 set up her own workshop producing handbuilt stoneware pottery mostly intended for garden use and concentrating on a particularly successful range of self contained fountains which were exhibited and sold at garden shows: R.H.S., Harrogate, Hampton Court Palace and Chelsea.

Barnacle Rocks 2 by Janet Durden Hey

The heavy physical nature of the work forced Janet to change direction in 1995 when she returned to two dimensional art. Since 1997 she has been exploring and enjoying the colourfully exciting batik technique creating hangings.

Bladder Wrack and Shells by Janet Durden Hey

Living in Skye, she finds inspiration comes from the observation of the natural world around her, the sea shore currently being her main focus of attention with its rich tapestry of interwoven colour and pattern.
