Karim Higazy - The Egyptian Connection

A new name emerging on the Scottish designer jewelley scene is Karim Higazy. An Egyptian by birth, Karim has been in Scotland for eight years and has only recently been utilising his love of gems by seting them within his own designs.

Necklace in silver drapes - £89

Karim is mainly self taught. He has produced some striking pieces using the techniques he witnessed for many years in the workshops of Cairo.

Working mainly in Silver, he uses both natural gemstones such as Onyx and Turquoise but also embraces Lab grown gems which include Ruby, Alexandrite Amethyst, Sapphire, Emerald and Garnet, his favourite being the Ruby.

Lab Ruby (18mm) in triple Silver Arcs - £99

Silver Bangle set with Lab Amethyst - £59

The stones are created from Corundum under extreme lab conditions to contain the exact properties of the natural stones and cannot be distinquished from the natural gems without special lab equipment. As a result, the owner can enjoy the luxury of wearing designer pieces set with large Ruby gemstones which would otherwise be beyond the reach of the average person.

Silver Necklace set with Lab Alexandrite - £55

Silver Winged Necklace set with Black CZ - £99

Although Karim's first love is literature and he is an avid writer of poetry, he is growing swiftly in status within the jewellery scene. You can see sample of his designs at West Kilbride Community Initiative,
Enigma Gallery, 45 Main Street, West Kilbride, Ayrshire.
